Quilter's JEM News for the week of January 7, 2019

Hello Friends!

We are in the deep freeze again this week, which means it is a perfect time for quilting! I find these cold wind chill evenings to be a great time for binding - not that I need an excuse to have a quilt on my lap!

In this newsletter I have some patterns and kits to tell you about, but most importantly: classes!  You've been asking about classes - especially daytime classes - and we have been working to find times and teachers. We think you will be excited about the variety of classes, not just quilts, but also from totes to pouches to the amazing jelly roll rug.

Be sure to especially check out the announcement of our new Scrap Masters class - after the holidays is a common time to take a look around and start to wonder how to organize and use all the odds and ends of fabric we can't bear to just toss. Scrap Masters is a monthly class for anyone with lots of these scraps! (So, yes, that would be me. And you.)

January is a great time to start a little Valentine's Day project. We love the Pretty Little Dots pattern in reds and whites - it goes together without a fuss and has a striking look. We have just the charm pack for it, too!

Of course, nothing says "warm and cozy" like wool! Did you know we have a beautiful array of wool precuts from Primitive Gathering, as well as really cute patterns? It's true! Here's a picture of just some of the colors we have - there are also lots of gorgeous blues and greens!

Now, it is also true that there are some among us who do not mind the cold. Like penguins! Perhaps if I had a nice plaid homespun belly from Moda's Oxford Wovens line I would be as happy about the cold as Elizabeth Hartman's penguins are.

We have classes starting soon:
Quilting 101 with Connie Selle - starts next week!
There are two options available for this 8 week class. One meets Monday afternoons at 1:30, starting on the 14th. The other meets Tuesday evenings at 6:30, starting on the 15th. Both classes will make the project below, in your choice of fabrics. Connie guides you through the entire quilting process, from choosing fabrics to finishing the binding, and teaches you all the basic methods, with lots of advice and tips along the way!

Towards the Sun with Jan Kirby - 2 sessions, 1/31 & 2/7  at 1pm
This is a pattern by Robin Pickens, designed for her Dandi Annie line (shown in the photo below). You might notice that the quilt has some curves - don't panic! Jan will show you three different ways to handle those curves. You might also look at this photo, or the one below where I've flipped up a corner, and wonder what is going on with the binding? It's a faced binding, a technique being seen more often on quilts, and you'll learn this technique as well. We have these fabrics in the shop if you want this look, or use other fabrics - but don't cut anything out until the first class!

Scrap Masters Scrap Club with Barb Quamme and Jan Kirby - starts this month!
scrap book
Are you a lover of leftovers?  A connoisseur of cuttings?  A rescuer of remnants?   A saver of the surplus?  A miser of the miscellaneous?  Even if you’ve only been quilting for a short time, you have fabric scraps!  Those lovely bits and pieces left from other projects, too precious to throw away.  But what to do with them all?

Barb and Jan are here to help!  Scrap Masters is the new group we are starting at Quilter’s JEM.   We will meet here on the 4th Thursday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  We have lots of ideas to share with you.  And we will have Kim Brackett’s book, Scrap Basket Bounty, available for purchase to whet your appetite for scrap quilts.  It has lots of great patterns, and though not required, we love it.  Bring your machine, cutters and rulers and basic supplies.  We will get you started on a new project, or you may bring any current scrap project you want to work on.  Or just come to try it out.  We’d love to have you!

For our January meeting we’ll be holding a Scrap Masters Swap! Bring a sandwich baggie of blue scraps (sized between 2-1/2” and approx. 6”) to trade.  The cost for each session is $5.00.  We’ll see you at Quilter’s JEM on January 24th at 6:30 pm!

Metro Tote with Alana Rustad - first opportunity next Tuesday!
tote
Come and make this smart tote, using the Metropolis fabric or your choice of fabrics! Class is on Tuesday the 15th at 1:30! Alana will be offering this class again in February, as an evening class.

Layla Pouch with Alana Rustad - Thursday, 1/17 at 1:00

You've seen this adorable pouch in a variety of different fabrics - you might even have already bought a kit! Now come and learn how to make it from the pattern designer herself. If you don't already have one, we have kits, or bring your own fabric to use and just purchase the pattern. We're also considering having a Pouch of the Month program, and this is your chance to be a charter member!

Jelly Roll Rug with Alana Rustad - offered in January & in February!
rug example
You've seen these on Instagram and you know you want to make one of these awesome rugs! But maybe, like me, you aren't sure you want to start one on your own! Alana, though, is fearless, and in this two-part class she will show you the tricks she's learned from making the jelly roll rug. I will tell you now that Alana has solved the two biggest problems I have heard people complaining about! Be sure to stop in and see our sample rug! We have two opportunities for you to take this class: January 23rd and 30th, and then the class will be offered again on February 2 & 9 at 10am-2pm.

First Friday with Connie Selle on February 1, 6:30pm
Bring the project of your choice to work on - be sure to call to register!

We hope you'll be giving us a call or stopping in to see our samples and sign up for classes. We're also starting to plan our Grand Opening celebration for February 23 & 24 - save the date! Be sure to also follow us on Facebook and Instagram, too, for news about online specials. Until then - happy sewing!
